Perhaps I wasn't concentrating enough on the actual points that Bastani made because I think I am familiar with the basic arguments. As I commented elsewhere, my personal take on DJ's ideas on democracy are that these are strange artefacts that occasionally need to be confronted and challenged since they bear no relationship to (at least to my) understanding of the world. What we do know, is that in order to have some sort of socialised economy in the UK, and by that I mean a fair (mixed) system for the 99%, one needs to place the predatory capitalism on leash. With respect to the relationship with the EU, UK should start by ensuring that we can nationalise vital industries that were sold off previously. This can only be achieved if we are outside the single market, since the current EU rules do not allow for this scenario. Remaining in the customs union as LP advocates would allow for for this nationalisation. Not sure how this would play out with respect to immigration from the EU, but to my mind this would be of secondary importance. Not sure if you read all that has been said on the board, but in essence the EU is using the the tool of immigration to lower the cost of labour in the western European countries to that of the eastern Europe in order to eventually compete with China (see Blythe vid). Granted that the UK would have the same problem to deal with in time, but at least it is hoped that we could have some control of this and not be subject to dictates from the EU predatory undemocratic neolib cabal whose main interest is in capital extraction at the expense of the 99%. There is more to it, but time is my enemy : ). I assume that the this (single market out, customs union in) scenario is probably wishful thinking now, so I am also at sea how this 'mad conundrum' will pan out, although I do have some preferences . I predict you will not find out any more info elsewhere ... Comment? Best
