The left are so easy to 'play' if one pushes the right buttons, especially if one is a media actor who developes a 'left' persona and uses the right of left rhetoric/jokes/banter, feeding the left crumbs to keep them happy. It's so ####ing easy, 'cause they are so grateful, for, well, almost anything they're spoon fed. That's perhaps a bit harsh, because the media is increasingly conformist and rightwing, so it's undrerstandable that the handful of people who are perceived as 'left' are warmly embraced by a left that's almost totally marginalised in public life and where it does exist, it's in controlled reservations, like comedy, where people like Boyle have a certain licence to be a bit nuaghty now and then. Perhaps the left need to grow up and stop laughing at 'right-on' comrades because of their politics, but because they are funny? It's perhaps too tall an order? I don't want to be too critical of Boyle, or the left, because it's pretty miserable to kick a dog when it's down, and the left is really, really, down. A lot of their troubles lie with their incredibly stupid acceptance of PC nonsense that's gotten way, way, out of hand; and too much gender and identity politics as well. If Boyle had made a similar remark about a woman, or lesbian, being subjected to a violent sexual attack in prison, people on the left and others, would have been outraged and his carerr might never have recovered. Only Assange, a tired and beaten-down prisoner, a weakened and isolated dissident, is seen as fair game for ridicule. That Boyle doesn't have a voice inside him telling him that making light of Assange's probably fate, imprisonment for life in a US high-tech torture hole, for daring to strip the liberal mask of off the face of the fascist state and reveal its numerous and massive crimes against humanity; is truly shameful on his part. |
