One of the hard-to-bite bullets of our dilemma, p, is that most of we Pampered Twenty Percenters Archived Message

will be losing our fatuous over-prosperity over the course of this century - whatever the gov/big-biz manipulators do; whatever climate remediation we turn out to attempt. That's just built in to the non-negotiable Long Descent on which hom sap is already embarked, willy nilly. Just get used to doing with a lot less, and with promoting scarcity-socialism as the only humane, ecologically-realistic, and just response to it. JMGreer points out that the phrase 'voluntary simplicity' was coined precisely to comfort the hyper-sensibilities of we PTPers, because we couldn't stomach the more starkly-realistic 'voluntary poverty'. BTW, this is the way I live in my dotage. And since it happens - more or less by accident - to be pretty much what scarcity-socialism looks like, I'm doing fine, and not uncomfortable with it at all; nor do I want for anything that I really need. In fact, I have enough spare to give a regular subsidy to my struggling grand-daughter - and her mam. And yet officially in Britain I'm deemed to be living 'below the poverty line' FFS! It's entirely different from the real, truly horrible poverty which I've actually witnessed at close quarters in places like Mumbai and Kolkata. You're quite right that that's not tolerable on any excuse. Nor is it in any way inevitable. Whatever happens with the climate, scarcity-socialism remains possible, and is indeed the only practical way for survivor communities to go. The traditionally-living Inuit, for just one of many examples, were very good at it, despite - or maybe that should be precisely because of - the extreme toughness of their way of life. I think we have to assume that the gangsters-in-charge are just as aware as we properly-informed dissident plebs are of the climate crisis, and indeed of the rest of the Synergising Global Crises. Their elitist, manipulative, managerial approach, as glimpsed in this example of astro-turfing, stinks, obviously, and is to be repudiated vigorously - in favour of genuinely-deep-green scarcity-socialism. Cheers, p!
