But there, there was... 'something' at least, with Assange there's literally nothing that could possibly stand up in court to cross-examination by the defence team. The trial would make Sweden's judicial process an international laughing stock, which they've been able to avoid, to a degree, because they haven't brought any charges. Once they bring charges everything is raised up to a higher level and they have to start actually arguing the case, and, as there is no 'case' hiding behind allegations is no longer possible. Swedish judges, especially with Trump in power, don't want to appear as if they are bowing to 'international pressure' or 'politics.' Better by far to blame the fiasco on 'over zealous' prosecutors.
