    Read this op-Ed earlier today, also thanks to @atlas_women, and am appalled by tone of his [Melzer's] comments. Whatever his stance may be on the treatment of Assange, Nils Melzer should think carefully about the way he flippantly dismisses allegations of rape.

    Thanks to the lovely ladies @atlas_women I came across this op-Ed by the UNSR on torture Nils Melzer about accusations of rape against Assange, and I’m shocked to read those words from a UN expert https://medium.com/@njmelzer/demasking-the-torture-of-julian-assange-b252ffdcb768

    Thank you Carrie, and I do hope there is some sort of answer as to why we see a human rights expert in a mandate that demands attention to the fate of women worldwide flippantly roll back definitions that have protected so many.

    I fully agree with your definition, but it doesn‘t match the facts: Neither woman alleged rape & Prosecutor Eva Finné found no evidence for "any crime at all“. Testimonies were then "revised“ by police (not the women) & re-submitted to a different prosecutor with political links.

    Your response in no way justifies your flippant dismissal of withdrawal of consent if a man removes or damages a condom unbeknownst to his partner. That it doesn’t “ring of rape” to you ignores convictions of sexual assault in similar circumstances (Switz, Canada, Germany etc)

    Using your platform to unofficially dictate what does & doesn’t qualify as sexual assault (despite progress in recent years to recognize consent as the primary ingredient for, well, consensual sex) is disappointing at best. It significantly weakens your overall argument too.

    but you ignore the politicisation of the case right from the start. have you researched the years of 'irregularities' in this case? UK CPS advising swedish prosecutor not to question assange, just one of many. if anything the treatment of this case undermines prosecution of rape.

    Not ignoring the politicization. However, no matter how politicized, there is no excuse for a @UN_SPExperts to discuss allegations of sexual violence in that manner. Statements like this have a chilling effect on victims of sexual violence speaking out, outside of this case.

    The issue remains that a large portion of the replies we’ve seen entirely dismiss our point and we’ve barely heard from Nils Melzer. We’re not interested in Assange. We’re here for the women who need human rights expert to fight for enforcement of their rights.

    @NilsMelzer replying to @K_interarma @_CarrieComer:

    "Sincere thanks to all who expressed their legitimate concerns, which I take seriously. Violence against women is high on my agenda: My upcoming UNGA report is on domestic violence as torture. I would greatly value an opportunity to discuss this further. What forum do you suggest?"
