I don't think anyone's missing the main point here, but you are right to suggest the womens' complaints "don't have the ring of rape except in Swedish" was offhand and unhelpful. Melzer should not apologise for anything except to correct the impression that he was unduly dismissive of the legal nature of the complaint in Sweden. It's not the law itself that should be critiqued but the sheer improbability of there being substance to the alleged offence - there's nothing wrong with that examination, in the absence of official information arising from a charge or trial.
