Hi Mary, you're right to call it BBC spectator sport. Yes this violence exists, its directly linked with economic problems, it's horrendous and army has now been deployed in a specific gangland area. The hardest violence is contained in a string of historically poor suburbs run by Cape Town's notorious gangs - the "28"s and the "26"s - who are rated more dangerous than Colombian gangs. Outside these areas, crime is more spread out and the death statistics are somewhat lower. Overall, South Africa is the most unequal country on the planet and much of this crime is linked with and fuelled by poverty.

aside from that... South Africa is bracing for a Meghan and Harry visit later this year. The Embassy will need to keep them circulating among black elite/celebrity circles and buffer them from young, smart intellectuals who'll have no compunction jamming Meghan's virtue signals
