There was a place (only small, maybe 15 acres) in Brisbane growing up that was planted as a rainforest, possibly part of the university of Queensland) that had not been before (possibly ever). It was convincing; and there are enough area of natural rainforest in se qld to compare for most people. I honestly can't see why not. You start with the dominant species and work down. Nature would start with pioneer species and work up. I think probably you end up with an accurate assimilation that would eventually morph into the real thing.
