This is an old, old, question; how to stop democracy turning into the dictatorship of the majority, which then crushes or ignores the minority. In the UK it's even worse because one has created a system where it becomes the dictatorship of the largest group or party. The Brexit thing and the referendum have pushed a great wedge into the entire political system and split it apart, fractured it and it's disintegrating before our very eyes. This could have disasterous consequences going forward. Increased political polarisation in a grossly unequal society like the UK, isn't a recipe for success or stability. It could be pushing us towards a form of civil war. A compromise would be pretending to leave the EU, but not really doing it in reality, like Norway does. But the UK is so much bigger than Norway. How can one follow most of the EU's rules and policies, yet have no part in creating them? It's a bad solution. Probably, now, there's a slight majority for remaining in the EU, if a new referendum was staged. Would that be an 'undemocratic' majority or not? What's so wrong with compromise? Can the UK really function half-in and half-out of the EU? The Brexit lobby pretended that the UK could maintain the economic advantages of being a EU member whilst getting rid of the responsibilities, he 'price' for EU membership. This was always a patently absurd argument.
