Switzerland, like Norway, are special cases. They are both extremely wealthy countries, but their economies are very small, which means one can have economic relations with them that are mutually beneficial. But I believe it'll be extremely difficult for the EU to accomodate a major economy like the UK's on these favourable terms, because that would undermine the reasons for EU membership and be destabilising. Of course there are other huge economies that trade with the EU, only they aren't part of the inner market. But China and the US are huge economies in their own right and can defend their interests. To imagine that the UK, outside the EU would be able to negotiate a better set of deals than they have at the moment is... fanciful. The problem within the UK is that the growth and increased wealth created by EU membership has been so badly distributed inside the UK itself, but one can hardly blame the EU for that, unless one is a demagogue determined to blame others for the shortcomings of the UK's own economic and social policies. Personally, there's an awful lot to criticise the EU for and it needs massive structural reforms. It's way too conservative and dominated by the huge German economy and German economic priorities. It needs to be far more democratic and transparent, just for starters. Only one has to appreciate that it's been the UK that's stood firmly in the way of these necessary reforms for decades. The UK opposed the moves towards a democratic European super-state, all the while complaining that Europe wasn't 'democratic' enough for London!
