I don't accept any of these excuses on Andrew Wakefield's part. He is , sorry was, a trained doctor and claimed to be a scientist. His study was flawed from the beginning, and basically set out to prove his hypothesis that autism and bowel disorder were related to MMR vaccine. His research was badly designed and the reasoning flawed. He wasn't the only person involved, but all but one co-authors retract their claim when all this was pointed out. Now, anyone can make a mistake, and doctors and scientists do, though this mistake was egregious and difficult to accept as other than fraudulent behaviour. What is wrong and entirely unacceptable is that when this is demonstrable, you don't revisit your findings and accept that you research was inadequate and your findings untrue. Instead, this man ploughs on totally oblivious, and continues to peddle his quack opinions to the severe detriment of communities around the world. That is unforgivable. You claim that his handling of the matter was entirely normal and proper - his behaviour has been the opposite of normal and proper for a medical professional, and he has rightly been struck off. I would like to think there is a case of some sort to make out that his callous disregard to the effects of his continued activism has caused unnecessary death and distress around the world should be subject to a criminal prosecution. My statement that Wakefield is lucky not to be in prison shouldn't be taken completely literally, because there may be, as you suggest, no law that he's actually broken, In which case, he is, as I've suggested, lucky. And as for comparing Assange to Wakefield, poor Assange has had to put up with enough calumny not to have to bear yet another boot into his reputation by this invidious comparison. One is an upright teller of truth, who has suffered severely for his principles. the other is a dishonest and cynical operator who continues to bring disrepute the profession he once belonged to and who doesn't seem to have any principles at all except for his own aggrandisement. If it were Andrew in Belmarsh, and Assange were free, I'd find that quite satisfactory. I am not discussing the matter of the Wakefield scandal any further, because I'm dealing with closed minds. You'll accuse me of the same, of course, but I'm happy enough with my opinion. Your opinion is based on hearsay, deviousness, unscientific reasoning and logical fallacies, mine is based on some relevant medical training and experience and the opinions of many experts in the field after exhaustive efforts to enquire thoroughly into what has happened. In supporting Wakefield, not only have you yourselves been conned, but you are disseminating totally unnecessary concern about MMR vaccine (and vaccination in general) that is causing avoidable worry in parents and avoidable serious illness in their children.
