I .think the point isn't about what the Guardian never was, but what its become now, which is something much worse.
Once it had room for dissident or highly critical voices relating to the state and foreign policy, on a quite regular basis, but not now. Things are very different indeed. Today it reads like its being edited by the Foreign Office and fed stories by the security services, almost like we're at war already.
