One can't just automatically compare events in Greece to the rest of the EU and the UK. The Greek economy is a bad way not because the EU wanted it to be in a bad way, but because successive Greek governments have grossly mismanaged the Greek economy. For example, by not introducing a proper and effective taxation system that curtailed massive tax evasion by individuals and businesses. Then, of course, they borrowed massively and recklessly, apparently thinking that because they borrowed from German banks, that the German state would be forced to step in a pick up the bill if things went wrong. Why not compare an EU country like Denmark to the UK? There everything 'positive' about EU membership, in comparison to Greece or the UK, seems to work very well indeed. With far higher wages, environmental standards, workers' rights. Is this all the work of the EU? No, it isn't. Denmark prioritised these areas for decades, unlike Greece or the UK.
