And in the UK there are no penalties if you don't vote.
Unlike Australia where it's compulsory but you only get fined a pittance if you don't vote. So, hardly "civil disobedience" there either.
At least that's my understanding of the Australian system.
Somebody (Derek maybe) backaways described not voting as an act of civil disobedience.
Been thinking a lot about Parliamentary Democracy and abstention recently to support my decision to abstain in the recent election. I never vote in elections but the attraction of Corbyn was strong. Managed to resist the temptation.
I did compromise in one way- I decided not to encourage others not to vote. A bit like the policy of the CNT anarchist union in Spain on one occasion in the 1930s. Though they had a good reason. I'll go into it some other time. Though it was certainly a betrayal of principles they had held for many years. And there are those who think that one-off policy led to the Civil War and defeat. No chance of that happening here...
