There are a few angles to this story that haven't been explored. You could have enlightened us. Why not? Meanwhile RhG has said it for me in the first couple of sentences. Of course I feel sorry for the girl. One doesn't need more than normal human empathy to feel her pain and injustice. Meanwhile to ignore the geopolitical situation around the case would be amiss, no? And yes, there is more ... there was a petition which had more than 200,000 signatures, extract: In 2014, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Human Rights found that Cyprus had the highest rates of reported sexual violence incidents to the police of all EU member states at 27%. I think that is quite significant, no? For info, on Monday there is a demo in front of Cypriot consulate. Full message: March for Justice for 19yo Briton in Cyprus - Monday 6 January Fern Champion London, United Kingdom 2 JAN 2020 — Hi all Following on from my last update, if you would like to attend Monday's demonstration in support of the young woman currently experiencing likely human rights violations in Cyprus after she reported being raped by multiple youths, then please see the facebook event for more information. Pressure is already mounting on the Cypriot President, Mr Anastasiades, to exercise his power of a pardon with many of the country's prominent legal figures writing to the attorney general urging him to intervene. Our own Foreign Office has described the case as 'extremely distressing' with foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, giving assurances that he will be raising it with the Cypriot authorities. Lawyers both in Cyprus and the UK both believe violations of the young woman's fundamental rights protected by the European Convention of Human Rights leaves plenty of room to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights. It is therefore crucial that we use our humanity to show our solidarity with her. In doing so we will show both our government and the Cypriot authorities that we are watching them. Empty promises from the Foreign Office will not do; we demand action. You can help by emailing your MP and ask them to march with us. We will also show the world that we are watching them. You do not get to violate our bodies in this way time and time again. Your constant abuse unites us and it is you who will be destroyed by it, not us. In 2014, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Human Rights found that Cyprus had the highest rates of reported sexual violence incidents to the police of all EU member states at 27%. Despite that, conviction rates remain vague although a study by Professor Kelly and Jo Levett in 2009 showed a rise in reporting but a decrease in convictions over a sustained period of time (referred to as 'classic attrition'). And then it gets more dire. There are currently no specialist rape crisis centres in Cyprus, meaning that these women who are most likely to report sexual violence are guaranteed neither justice nor support for the trauma they have suffered. So we will march on Monday for the British woman trapped in Cyprus who has likely suffered a violation of her human rights, and we will march in solidarity with all women in Cyprus who have been fighting for these rights for years. 12pm - High Commission Of The Republic Of Cyprus & Consulate-General - 13 St James's Square, St. James's, London SW1Y 4LB. We will be heading for Parliament Square for 1:30pm. See you then, thank you. Fern
