Another Windows 7er here. I got the message and updates.
I have to get a replacement laptop anyway (specced for video editing, and likely a refurb) anyway and will probably install Linux Mint Xfce on my current one, like I've done previously with other pensioned-off machines. This version of Linux will run well on lower-specced older machines and is relatively familiar for Windows users.
It's possible to run it from a USB stick, and boot from that.
However, in order to free yourself from Microsoft there is a certain amount of learning to do. And certain functions you take for granted in Windows are a PITA with Linux. But anyway...
