What's a "comfortable dictatorship"? Who said anything about "linear progress"? I do think we do have many elements of a police state, and I think we're moving further in that direction as I said. (when I say "we" I mean the west generally, not the Uk specifically, which, like the US, is probably further down that road than most others). But we don't get massacred when we take to the streets as they do in Egypt. We don't get cut into pieces for even mild expressions of dissent as they do in Saudi Arabia. We don't get thrown in jail for years for criticizing the government as happens in China. I guess it's largely a question of semantics and how one defines the term which is not a clearly-delineated concept.
