It was labour who really got the ball rolling with the dismantlement of the nhs, so govt in general is to blame. None seemed to see the importance of national healthcare except for labour in an offhand socialist way. Obviously it has widespread economic ramifications too,,which satisfies criteria for both the tories and the blairites to be an important thing. Monetising health is a short term gain but is not economically viable. No capitalist endeavours are when you get down to the nitty gritty because they all pretend the world would somehow still run (and make them money) without the vast working class and continuous access to resources. However if the tories are now endorsing it, perhaps after all this it will be more difficult for them to backtrack, particularly in view of the private healthcare mess in the us. If even Tory voters are acting hypocritically on the subject the nhs might eventually get some traction in central govt as a no compromise national entity? This is the time, of course, to log their reaction and then not stop challenging them (or any prospective labour MPs) on its importance. After all if we can have one pandemic, we can have many, and the general health of the population is critical when facing such. I guess I'm saying its a potentially good thing rather than just an opportunity for a rant about hypocrisy.
