@Ian M My wife is sitting on her improvised home office sofa using Microsoft Teams. Possibly less bad than Zoom, it's difficult to say. At least it's a company laptop she's using and not a personal one.
As you refer to, "what are you going to use instead" Skype has its issues too.
Ultimately, most individuals/companies will choose convenience over security and privacy.
I know of at least one project that seeks to provide proper end-to-end encrypted, decentralised, permissionless solutions for such communications. Hopefully not too far off, and on a smaller scale at first. I'll post here when I know more.
