"Spending/borrowing/printing money can work if you do something with it that generates further activity (eg build infrastructure, new industries), giving people jobs, and hence spending money." That's what i meant really. I think johnson/trump et al did want to go full denial (at least of the lockdown method), but that the massive amonts of people starting to fill icu wards made them poop their pants and retreat from that - the lockdown at that point was the only way they could avoid an even bigger disaster - it was firefighting, and of course as we always point out, if they'd have just done proper track and trace early on like sensible countries (if they hadn't already got rid of most of the infastructre) the death toll would have been much smaller, and consequently the economy wouldn't have tanked as much. Johnson's superman strategy was a false economy.
