SB said: 'just because 'they' were shit about that stuff, doesn't necessarily mean they're lying about this one' - I suppose anything's possible, but it would be borderline miraculous IMO if on this issue the sociopaths-in-charge were actually acting out of genuine care & concern for the health and wellbeing of the population. The fact they've been punishing us with austerity-on-steroids since 2008/9, keeping wages down, ginning up the property market to insane levels, continuing the outsourcing and deregulation of labour, and the million other ways of cheapening and degrading the lives of those being governed (er, and how about continuing to drive us into climate catastrophe!) rather gives the game away. If what they do actually benefits some people you can bet it's by accident, not design. There's always a shitty ulterior motive, that's just the nature of states and capitalism, though it sounds like you understand that part...

Shyaku said: 'Mandates are totally counter-productive, and if your aim is really to promote vaccination, start by not mandating it. Offer it voluntarily as part of a broader program of social investment.' - glad you agree I felt from the start that mandating this was crossing a line. Make it available, try to persuade people that it's in their best interests - fine, as long as you don't lie or resort to underhand manipulation or emotional blackmail. But if that doesn't work then tough - look in the mirror and ask why a large proportion of the population no longer trusts the govt over anything, and address the behaviour that leads to that mistrust. Don't force people to pay the price for your total lack of morals or ethics.

'What more can we do?' whined Helen Whately when they were ramming through mandates for the care sector ( https://members5.boardhost.com/xxxxx/msg/1626351755.html ) Answer: nothing. Be thankful as many people accepted it as did (amazingly, I thought) and stop there. But they just can't help themselves, can they?

What have the catholic church been doing/saying?

    cheers,
