Curious that you mention Italy because I thought that Austria-Hungary, Vienna in particular, had a lot of what turned out to be proto-fascist political sentiment in the 1890s.
All of the "modern" states of the period after 1971 saw reactionary movements of an obscurantist character, particularly lower middle-class groups cramped by the rise of working-class unions, suppressed national groups and secularism.
