Starmer and Zelensky - "I mak sakker"

All allied courageous fraternity standing against the maddened Russian Bear. (I wonder if Starmer deigned to ask if he could meet up with leaders of the opposition in Ukraine for further fraternal greetings?) Yet within a month or two of gaining his premiership, Zelensky will likely be stabbed in the back by the Americans as the war is being lost, and Starmer will willingly add his contribution without a scruple, just as he's stabbed in the back so many of his own "Labour clan" and in doing so, if he has any Scottish ancestry, he could cry "I mak sikkar" !!

(Explanation - my middle name is Kirkpatrick, it's a family name for several generations, but mine will be the last. The tradition is my presumed ancestor, Roger Kirkpatrick was an attendant of Robert the Bruce when he killed John "the Red" Comyn, chief of Clan Comyn in the church at Dumfries. It is said that Kirkpatrick met the Bruce rushing out of the church exclaiming that he thought he had killed Comyn and that Kirkpatrick then drew his dagger with the words, "I mak sikkar", meaning “I make sure”; the clan motto and chief's coat of arms to this day allude to this story.)

Spelling - it should be sikkar but who knows, they were probably all illiterate anyway.

In connection with which, there is the world famous Siccar Point on the coast of Berwickshire which features as number 1 in the IUGS list of the entire world's most important historical geological sites. Have any of you heard of it? It is the spot where the true science of geology started, and the founder of the science was James Hutton (1726 - 1797) , who should, in my estimation, and at the very least in Scotland, and possibly in the wider world, be as famous as Darwin or Newton. To have the honour of No 1 is a huge recognition from those who really know.

PPS - Later Roger Kirkpatrick was himself murdered by another clansman in a private quarrel. The proud peaceful tradition in Scottish history.

There is debate in scientific circles as to whether or not global warming is accelerating. I am convinced it is, as is Jame Hansen, who all along has warned that it very well might. And if it is accelerating, most of the modelling which doesn't show this is likely wrong. There is now a distinct likelihood that the planet could heat by over 4 deg Celsius by this century's end.

When you heat the planet with the equivalent of 5 atomic bombs (Hiroshima) per second, that is what happens = 50,000 tonnes of TNT per second, or 43,200 megaton bomb explosions every single day.

I did wonder...
Most of the aristos in Scotland were as literate and multilingual as anywhere else btw...And as far as the eighteenth c goes the general population were probably the most literate in Europe...thus Hutton, who was blessed by the unintended consequences of the literacy drive of the Reformation: geared towards enabling the reading of the bible...the unintended consequences in the minds of the bright were a critical understanding of the literal approach (such as Usshers date of the creation:23rd October, 4004BC) which of course spurred on those both literate and curious such as Hutton to disproving it. The peculiar and ancient geology of Scotland itself helped of course...

It is said that Hutton invented or indeed discovered "time": certainly in the way that we understand it in the modern world that would seem true to me.

Yes, Scotland's beauty has been long in the gestation....when I visit Scotland, and last year I spent a few days on Colonsay, and the year before camped in the Outer Hebrides - I can almost feel the sentience of the rocks in their immediacy and presence, their own understanding of the place they have in our lives; no inanimate substrate to our existence, but possibly the very essence of it.

Its just a fairly small medieval nordic kingdom full of myths and bullshit that you get bullied for calling what it is.

We're Nordic now: very good...and which nations are not full of myth and bullshit btw? it goes with the concept. As to "what it is", as I recall you're the dude who visited once and decided that Edinburgh was the most Scottish of cities...and was terrified because you mistook some noisy Edinburgh public schoolboys going to the rugger in kilts for the barbaric hordes descending on your genteel persons for rape and pillage.

Forgive me for not taking your idea of " what it is" seriously in the slightest. Its evident that what you "know" about Scotland could be written postage stamp and seems to consist of mere absurdities salted with prejudice.

If you want to move beyond that to what we are talking about, go look up James Hutton: otherwise the "father of Geology"...Doubtless most unfortunately from your perspective, a Scotsman who made the observations which lead to the creation of the subject of Geology in Scotland.
