I also think Gershkovich was at it so journalism should not be a crime but spying is. ...no amount of cajolery, and no attempts at ethical or social seduction, can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party...So far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin.

A lot of the time, although not always, that's a bit of a giveaway. They've protested a little bit but not like a campaign with relentless coverage and presentation of "Here's what actually happened..". They've decried it but that's it, which is another giveaway really.
When they know they can't push a fake narrative (presumably because the Russians will present their evidence in detail to counter it, thus exposing his [I'm assuming] guilt).

When he was arrested I actually saw a news webpage that referred to him being found near the tank factory with actual commuications equipment that he was either concealing or recovering. I think I got that from a machne translation of a Russian site. And then it disappeared.
