Fairly old news, this vid from 4 months ago (don't know why youtube doesn't put the actual date on vids):

Could be a stunt to ingratiate himself with the American right, I suppose, but he has always been a bit 'spiritual' in one way or another, so not entirely out of the blue. Maybe it's just me, but it has coincided with him having nothing interesting to say, and adopting highly dubious stances like presenting Yaxley-Lennon in a positive light, which we talked about before. I've noticed it with other recent converts whose work I used to value like Paul Kingsnorth & Martin Shaw. Also with Dylan, and I'm sure there are some others I can't think of right now. They lose their edge, get all comfortable, start spouting off boring platitudes, making tedious attempts to fit Jesus into their previous ideologies, trying to make him cool in some way or other. It never works. And they never discuss the toxic social role of Christianity and other religions - all the stuff about eternal damnation, pacifying and depoliticising people who might otherwise resist, getting people to focus on the supposed next world instead of this one, missionising, justifying genocide and the spread of imperialism, persecution of heretics and unbelievers, peadophilia, hatred of the body, of nature, of women, of homosexuals etc etc. Somehow it never crops up in discussion of their groovy new spiritual identity, which is dishonest IMO. You can't just parachute in to a 2,000 year old tradition without examining and coming to terms with how it has behaved in the real world for all that time. Otherwise it's just about you and your stupid new-agey feelings which you're projecting inappropriately onto a religion that for the most part would utterly reject them.

(Shouldn't have said they never discuss it, indeed Brand briefly talks about crusades, paedophilia in the church, collaboration with the nazis in ww2 etc in the above vid, around 3:50, putting it down to the 'institutions that have grown out of Christianity', not Christianity itself. I doubt it will be a subject he dwells on though.)

Yes, I was aware of his "rebirth" but this latest episode struck me as quite ridiculous; a video would have been better.

I still agree that the timing of the legal issues and his new focus is probably more than coincidental.

Another good cringe, with swelling orchestral music, Brand on his knees with eyes closed, holding the microphone like he's about to give it a blowjob, and whaddaya know, a litany of boring, empty platitudes. You can tell he's feeding off the audience's energy, hungry for their approval. In conventional establishment Christianity I could never quite get the nonsense of the trinity other than as a post hoc shoehorning of what seems to have been a great human being into the boxed status of a mere mythological avatar.

I think I prefer the "great teacher" Jesus...but of course then theres the paucity of his teachings to deal with, of which for some reason the Bible is somewhat parsimonious...and for which I think you would have to go to something early like the Gospel of Thomas for even a half decent supplement.

I reckon any critical reflective "conversion" in the sense of following the teachings of Christ merely leaves you as a heretic: indeed not a Christian...in the eyes of the main establishment churches who all plump for the mythological version over the human.

He seems the type to have his own interpretation and 'personal relationship' with Jesus as part of a loose kind of spiritual practice. My point is that you have got a very one eyed view of religion. It's Hackney and lazy. It's a view I shared at one time, until I met some actual real life religious people and was moved by their decency. Of course state religions have been repressive, that's what statesdo. It doesn't invalidate those who are moved to help others by their faith. The views you express remind me of those who write off socialism in its entirety because of Stalin and Pol Pot. The left seems to have entirely left the field regarding g religion, preferring to sneer rather than challenge the mega church hucksters of tbe right who now have e free rein. There are alot of people who support social justice because of what they see in Jesus's, but you'd rather snipe than welcome them in solidarity. It's a shame.

There's plenty of debate to be had regarding religion of course, but this thread was mostly about a self-serving narcissist (Brand) potentially faking a religious conversion for clicks and cash and to help a racist, rapist to get elected as POTUS. Where on the left are we supposed to welcome that shit bag? If you believe he's genuine well that's for you to deal with, but it seems an odd use for his new found faith no?

I'm cynical about religion generally and regard it as superstitious nonsense from a less evolved time but, as I noted above, there's another debate to be had there, but there are decent people everywhere, religious or not, just mostly not in positions of power of course despite their claims.

Yes, getting back to the original point, I'm quite cynical myself about Brands recent trajectory, and I'm no more keen on making a show of religion than was, so I find it all a bit off. I think I just got the hump because there seems to be a knee jerk response to anything involving religion to have a pop at the bible bashers, when believers and non believers should be working together.

My perspective on Christianity comes from being a former convert, spending many years participating in church liturgy before rejecting it and moving on, but not before closely observing it and formulating my own critique. So I don't think it's fair to describe my views as 'one eyed', 'Hackney (sic - autocorrect?) and lazy'. I too have met many religious people who were kind, sensitive, thoughtful and who acted on their beliefs. I also met many who were intolerant, conformists, social climbers, some outright predators, and many who were the kind of 'nice' that actually isn't healthy - ie: repressing 'bad' thoughts & feelings, and denying themselves to the point that they let others walk all over them. Which ones are the 'true' Christians? It seems impossible to answer, there are so many contradictions and vague statements open to a hundred different interpretations in the bible, and that's before you get to how the various institutions have taken hold of it to serve their own agendas. So I prefer to direct criticism towards the institutions and the history rather than at individual spiritual beliefs and practices (though I guess I didn't do that 100% above, my bad.)

I agree that the left is mistaken to ignore or disparage spirituality, which is part of the human experience and will emerge in some form or other no matter what you try to do. Soviet communism was unable to destroy it, and even adopted aspects of a religious institution itself, eg: the iconography and devotion to figures like Lenin and Stalin and quoting chapter & verse from the Party orthodoxy. I've seen it argued that the current major religions might be able to adapt and provide a helpful guide to people as complex society continues to unravel, undergoing their own form of 'rewilding' in the process. There's certainly refuge in there from the modern hyper-consumerist insanity and the worship of money & greed. So maybe.

But to expect religions born within the context of civilisation (and adapting to survive within it over the course of millennia) to outlast and survive beyond its collapse seems like... a tall order. A Christianity operating within the context of a sustainable society would look nothing like it does today, to the point where you probably wouldn't even recognise it. No hell, no heaven, no sin, no devil, no salvation, no 'go forth and multiply', no 'my kingdom is not of this world', no

...no patriarchs, no priesthood, no denigration of weeds*... I could go on! On your point that 'believers and non believers should be working together', I agree, and am happy to work with anybody who doesn't impose their belief systems on me generally. I'd even rather ally with the likes of Brand and Tucker Carlson than a whole array of people who describe themselves as leftists, but are actually authoritarian statists. But I reserve the right to criticise them when I think they're talking sh!te

But what would he come back to? He made it pretty clear that the Covid debacle had drastically altered his political perspective, especially regarding his perceived allies on the left.

I have been shocked at how effectively big pharma has subverted collectivist left ideology to promote mass vaccination campaigns that are rolled out to boost their profits. Just like the religious, the vaccine sceptical have been jeered at and shunned. It's no wonder the establishment keep control when it's so easy to get the masses to turn on each other.
