Obviously Huw, having been kicked off his pedestal and lost his mega-salary, has 'suffered enough'. Isn't that how the judicial mind works in Bent-AF-Britain?

Maybe you're right Mark, but your "comparable conviction" mightn't be that comparable after all. But Edwards would have his advantages of expensive lawyers and well prepared defence, as with all wealthier members of our society have so nothing new there. First offence, no prior or subsequent offending, accepted chronic depressive mental illness, prompt admission of guilt, unlikely to re-offend, they all do count Perhaps too a full prison system and the possibility of assault in prison from his fame. Too, the person from whom he got the pictures, the active supplier, Alex Williams, got a 12 month suspended sentence, so it was always likely Edwards would at least not get worse than that. Finally, Edwards will remain on a sex offenders register for seven years, that could seriously interfere with his daily life, and in particular his travel overseas. The magistrate's management of this case seems reasonably appropriate to me.

the NSPCC has calculated at least half a million men have accessed child abuse material on the internet. This being so, if the police were to arrest them all, and all to be imprisoned, we'd have to build a few hundred prisons just to house them. The Independent has a relevant article here

Perhaps there's a case for treating the viewing of such material, and not literally "making it" or causing it to be made or participating in actual child abuse or distributing such material should be a lesser offence sanctioned with compulsory counselling, review etc. . The only problem with this is the addictive nature of porn and child abuse material, and the number of cases, not a lot, but significant, where men having become hooked on this material have then committed offences against children.

Perhaps legislation against internet providers who are the actual "distributors", when you think of it, could be beefed up?

Images of child pornography are inseparable from child abuse - no market for these images means no money for the pornography-makers and the ultimate death of this particular form of abuse. Viewing child porn is not a victimless activity.

Indeed, Sue, never suggested anything different, just the scale of the problem is getting out of hand and we should be looking at other ways of dealing to it. The problem with widespread viewing of pornography was not a problem before the internet. So it's the internet system that needs to be reviewed. monitored and controlled. To some men, more perhaps that many women perhaps understand, pornography is highly addictive, and child abuse imagery is equally so, perhaps even more so because users know it is illegal and ordinary (legal) porn becomes less stimulating, there's the extra excitement of illicit activity. The "market" thrives in this regard with the availability of the material, not with the demand, it's almost the reverse of classical economic theory, much like drug addiction or gambling - provide the outlets and the demand is fuelled and rises. That's the nature of addictive behaviour. Just some general thoughts around the matter, as there has to be some reason why the problem is now so rampant.

Child pornography is a disgusting thing so juxtaposing it with people that the state doesn't like is elementary e.g. Kincora, Margaret (Enver) Hodge, grooming gang scandals. Abusing abused children is even worse than the original abuse.

Making transgression easy and apparently free from detection emboldens people, which is a definition of entrapment.

It's a tricky one. Consider what happened with Telegram channels i.e. Pavel Durov saga, ptb will stamp on it with an iron boot, achieving nothing. I don't need to spell it out, but it is a balance of free speech vs control by ptb. If the present psychotic elite in the west doesn't calm down and accept that Ukraine is lost and that Israeli regime may soon collapse and perhaps even implode, it's some way to go.

Beefing up surveillance of platforms can be done easily methinks, but not in the present climate, and not in accordance of free speech advocates aims. Fine balance.

I can see the issues, but you know, here's all these algorithms that direct your viewing, your clicking, your ads, you forms - banks can pile on charges in all sorts of niches in your accounts, I think a lot could be done. I'm not sure that viewing pornography is a human right, so if some "legal" stuff got caught in the net, and wasn't viewable, so what?
