Maybe you're right Mark, but your "comparable conviction" mightn't be that comparable after all. But Edwards would have his advantages of expensive lawyers and well prepared defence, as with all wealthier members of our society have so nothing new there. First offence, no prior or subsequent offending, accepted chronic depressive mental illness, prompt admission of guilt, unlikely to re-offend, they all do count Perhaps too a full prison system and the possibility of assault in prison from his fame. Too, the person from whom he got the pictures, the active supplier, Alex Williams, got a 12 month suspended sentence, so it was always likely Edwards would at least not get worse than that. Finally, Edwards will remain on a sex offenders register for seven years, that could seriously interfere with his daily life, and in particular his travel overseas. The magistrate's management of this case seems reasonably appropriate to me.
