As a techno-ignoramus, does anyone understand how Israel weaponised pagers?

Does anyone understand how Israel pulled off its pager attack? I mean, how many of these devices would they need to booby-trap? How could they ensure members of Hezbollah would use them? I'm assuming the pagers weren't labelled in anyway as 'made in Israel" so are other countries involved?

I think they intercepted a shipment of pagers, and inserted tiny amounts of explosive and some electronics to trigger when an appropriate signal was sent. Seems walkie-talkies too as some of them have just exploded today.

Hezbollah switched to pagers because they are receive only, so cannot be tracked, unlike mobile phones. They are also reported to have an extensive private land line setup. Presumably they communicate by sending code words over the pagers, which then tells the person to phone a particular number for instructions, or do some pre-arranged action.

This. It's not like they just made regular pagers explode; it was a batch of doctored ones.

Tracking back to who supplied them and how they were intercepted will be revealing...maybe, if they let it.

Disgusting terrorist bastards though. The usual thought experiment applies in spades here: imagine any official enemy (Al Quaida say) doing this to American politicians or service members. The sky would be falling and it would be the worst atrocity since 9/11 but when it's the apartheid state? Ooooh, aren't they clever?

This operation by Israel must have taken a fair bit of planning - I wonder how long ago the explosives were planted - before or after 7th October? It is a genuinely shocking action by Israel and one that is probably not that hard to copy. For the sake of murdering a handful of Hezbollah members, Israel has probably put many civilians in many countries in harm's way.

This is deliciously intriguing; it comes from a very well-informed Russian intel source.

So the story goes that the head of MI6 Richard Moore ordered his spooks - in Hungary - to put explosives in the pagers in case Hezbollah got "out of control”.

But" among the English T.E. Lawrences", there were not only friends of Israel, but also enemies of Moore. They handed over the alarm code to the Mossad. So, "without hesitation, they neutralized all of Moore's agents with one blow."

This might indeed be directly linked to the Brit nest of spiders. There won’t be a smoking gun, of course. What is already happening is the whole Brit press hysterically stating this was just a tricky Mossad op - and MI6 was not involved at all.

On twitter the dot-connecting is so far going like this: Hungary --> Orban --> Friend of Putin --> Putin.

I think everyone sees how idiotic that is but it's possible that was behind the choice of that company to get a bit of shade thrown on Russia at the same time. This is perhaps what's behind Pepe's MI6 nudge from his "well-informed Russian intel source", trying to deflect some of that flak.

Not sure why they'd need to deflect when everyone and their auntie knows the apartheid state did it.

We are all guessing with limited info available. Interestingly the MoA comment from where I pulled Pepe's comment, the first para said:

The CEO and founder of BAC is Cristiana Arcidiacono-Barsony, who describes herself as a strategic adviser in internal affairs with international experience in the Middle East.
According to her academic profile she studied at SOAS and LSE universities in London.

The above points to an MI-6 involvement in the affair.

She also worked for UNESCO. Her having gone to LSE and SOAS doesn't indicate MI6 involvement in any way; that's a massive reach.

They probably know nothing about it. The genocide lovers most likely broke into a warehouse somewhere alng the route and swapped rigged ones in. Easiest way, fewest points of stress. How they knew about the shipment is a pretty trivial issue.

I doubt we'll see the actual details and will only get the legend.
