My membership of the Green Party triggered a storm of publicity. First off was the Jewish Chronicle whose Jane Prinsley wanted to know why I had decided to join the GP.
I wondered why the JC was interested in which party I’m a member of. ‘anti-Semitism’. Prinsley replied:
‘The JC is interested because it appears lots of people who were suspended from Labour over allegations of antisemitism have now joined Zack Polanski’s party.’
My response was that
The reason why lots of victims of the false allegations of antisemitism in the Labour Party have joined the Green Party is because the allegations were false. The fact that so many of the victims were Jewish might give you a clue as to their bona fides
Prinsley’s only response was to ask if I
continue to refute the claim that you are a notorious antisemite?
My response was that I had spent my life fighting fascism and racism, anti-Semitism and Zionism included. The article finished with:‘He did not respond directly to the allegation that he is a “notorious anti-Semite.’
I sent in a letter rebutting this. The JC subsequently amended the article to make it clear that I didn’t accept this smear. On a tangent, I think this is really what bothers me about the spate of people converting to Christianity lately. I wouldn't mind so much if they tried to wrestle with the historical legacy of the religion in forced conversion, opening up societies to imperial plunder through missionising, terrifying people with visions of hell and pacifying them with promises of heaven, thereby siding with the powerful who don't want them to revolt and seek redress in this life. Or every attempt made to dress up genocidal or imperial actions with religious justifications. Or the attempt to divert peoples' attention away from the real, physical world and focus it instead on abstractions and the unprovable assertions of religious authorities. Etc etc. But none of this seems to give them pause for a second, the likes of Paul Kingsnorth, Martin Shaw, Russell Brand and others I can't think of right now. This makes me think that they will gladly line up with the religion's next attempts to justify & facilitate atrocities and attack those who oppose them. Kingsnorth already did it re: Gaza: https://members5.boardhost.com/xxxxx/msg/archive/1753137387.html and we know about Brand's courting of the far right, including 'Tel Aviv Tommy'.
The Greens are busy supplying us with another classic example. Look at how people act, and less at what they say. Or as a certain philosopher put it: 'by their fruits you shall know them'.
I felt a bit grumpy after I came to that conclusion in the early 90a about Hull Social Services management and then found that it was a cliche. Yes, clever people have been around for a long time, it turns out. I can usually trace my 'original' ideas to books I read 20 years ago, and sometimes discover that I already had that epiphany (based on someone else's idea), and even wrote about it at the time, before obviously forgetting it and coming back to it years later. Nothing new under the sun etc. One of these days I'll sit down and read Marx properly and be like: FFS, that's what I've been struggling to articulate all this time!
