They try to sell each other & swindle each other.
The various gm's discuss potential draft day trades in advance.
"Hypotheticals".
On draft day they use that info to leverage phone calls.
Ie- vikings have a deal in place with the falcons to move up to #8, in return- the falcons recieve a 1st & 4th this year & a 3rd in 2025.
Nothing is confirmed- its just teams gauging cost.
Then on draft day, the Broncos call ATL & inquire about moving up to 8. ATL tells Den about the deal they have in place in an effort to get more. Perhaps a #1 this year & a #1 in 2025.
The reverse as well. Vikings get a maybe deal in place with atl, and then call the chargers using that maybe deal to get the chargers to sell their #5 for a lower price then they were thinking.
Gaining leverage? Do NFL gm's try such things?
I would imagine they do as often as possible. Taking & making multiple phone calls in the weeks leading up to as well as on draft day. Thats a big reason why the draft clock ticks down to the final minute with most selections.
And its just like the housing market. A lot of a specific type available = buyers market. Limited availability= sellers market. & Many buyers vs many sellers influences actual costs.
I think as well. Specific gm's are trusting of a specific gm or 3. While other gm's gain bad trade partner reputation for waffling on agreements or changing parameters too often
I have no proof. But it is a dog eat dog world this nearing $25B industry known as the NFL.
Kwesi is regularly fleeced according to the trade value chart. I would think that makes his phone call as one ALL gm's wish to take before finalizing any other deals. You can bet the selling gm is suggesting , " a team behind you is trying to move up". Everybody inside the process playing chicken.
Who knows who actually gets fleeced in the process. It was rumored Childress & Spielman got fleeced via that method when they traded up into rnd 3 to get Tavaris Jackson. Is it urban myth or actual fact? Only their hairdresser knows🤣
I do think... They dont need to move up past jets for maye.
Its Bo Nix & McCarthy theyd have to move up higher to get.
Stand pat at 11- they can most likely land Maye or Penix. I think Chris Simms has denver pegged, That Sean Payton wants Bo Nix. I also think McCarthy Fits NE defense 1st direction better than Maye.
Ideally, we want Denver to trade up early in the process. That hopefully settles the raiders into not trading up. If the raiders trade up- its going to be a free for all... If the vikings trade up- I think theyre going to overpay. Thats how I see it playing out.
Harbaugh so very much wants to fleece the Vikings & stick it to the wilfs!
Raiders & broncos don't have the capital to move that far up without giving 3 1st rounders or 2 1sts & 2 2nds.
Thats just too high of a price for 2 bad/ mediocre afc west teams. I think the movement- trade targets are #'s 8-10. Atl, Chi, NYJ.
Those 3 teams are likely near 100% in their belief that all 3 of vikes, broncos & Raiders are targetting a qb- meaning the position player they want will likely be there at 11, 12, & 13.
Kwesi wouldnt pay the premium to move up for anthony Richardson last year. Lets hope he has the same courage this year. Darnolds going to be the starter week 1. Probably all season. There is zero reason to get caught up in panicky overdrafting of a project rookie qb.
6 rook qb's- minimum in the 1st round.
History tells us, 50% minimum will not be the true "franchise" qb you hope to be getting. Probably only 1 or 2 becomes a top 10 playmaking bad ass starting qb for the team that drafts him. And .. at least one qb from day 2 or 3 will be better pros than most of the 1st rounders.
