Interesting to get the inside scoop, thx. You just may recall that few months back, I said I was interviewed for a decarbonisation job. At the time I was suspicious and thinking of it as some dubious techno-fix and that someone is probably making a lot of dosh pretending to be greening the planet. I always wondered about the likelihood of CO2 staying underground if pumped into depleted wells as talked about. Pumping gas into oil wells is a standard technique of pressurising oil wells and improving oil extraction. And no, the gas does not escape. Seems like it would require rather large subsidies and some pipeline infrastructure - a lot of work for no reward There is already extensive pipeline network in place from the North Sea oil extraction. In essence you just reverse the flow, so to speak. The local pipeline from power station to existing network is relatively trivial in terms of costs. I know govts like to burn our money on all sorts of crazy schemes, but this one seems especially hard to justify, apart from the have-your-cake-and-eat-it attitude which obvs is no long term solution. Unless one decides to say stop giving the population any electricity leading to the collapse of life as we know it, the power station is a good option, except this time there is no CO2. The cost of doing this decarbonation is roughly 10% of the cost of building the power station – I am guessing. The long term solution is to change the political and economic system. Logically this would lead to the same result i.e. decarbonising first +++. Unless one prefers Stone Age Now.
