I suspect the cat was showing symptoms leading to the further investigation. They genetically sequenced the virus and found it was the same in the cat, the two owners and the vet who caught it.

And yes, I agree that a vet should remember that eyes have vulnerable mucous membranes, too - not just noses and mouths!
