GSH cannot prevent bacterial growth, but it can help the immune system tackle those bacteria. Again, please do read the section in the article that talks specifically about GSH and the immune system. In Visca's observational study, his patients on GSH showed lower bacterial counts after being on GSH than before.
Can GSH prevent scarring of the lungs? No; GSH is not a cure, and the oxidant level is just too high in CF. But GSH can slow the decline that is inevitable in CF.
If you feel GSH does not work for Ashleigh, then by all means drop it from her regimen. But our sons are delF508/delF508, and are doing great on it. I am sure there are other genetic reasons for this difference than CFTR genotype. There are many people who have done remarkably better on GSH, and there are some that do not see much change. I have no vested interest in GSH, and have never received one cent for hosting this message board, the website, or subscribing to the journals from which the abstract summaries come. Nor one cent for all the countless hours of research. I do this because GSH has been tangibly helpful to our sons, and my mother's heart wants to make sure other mothers know about this adjunctive approach.
Is GSH a therapy which is being examined seriously by the medical community? You bet--just go to PubMed and enter "glutathione" and "cystic fibrosis." This isn't some nut-job idea, Carrie. This is an idea with real science behind it. And it's being examined not only for CF, but COPD/emphysema, IPF, ARDS, and even non-respiratory diseases, such as diabetes, Parkinson's, etc. Again, the article surveys that literature on disease conditions that may find GSH has therapeutic value. You are going to see a lot more about GSH as the years go by, even in conventional medical circles.
Your family is going through a terribly trauma. Our hearts and prayers go with you, and we respect any decision you make. We have chosen a different decision, and we stand by it.
In our prayers, we will particularly ask that the doctors will figure out what the nodule is . . . You must be so worried . . .
