Beyond all the hype and the "spokesman for a generation" bullshit, Nirvana actually were one of the better rock bands of their time - though I have a slightly stronger personal bias in favor of Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, not to mention Screaming Trees and Afghan Whigs. I also really like the raw, cheaply recorded sound of 'Bleach,' which sometimes sounds like an early Melvins record played at 45 RPM.
