Another random curiosity, have you heard the songs Andy Partige produced for Blur? He was originally the producer for Modern Life Is Rubbish but ended up getting the boot. it's not too hard to see why though since the three songs he did with them sound like XTC a heck of a lot more than they do like Blur.

Also have you heard anything by the band The Lilac Time? I initially discovered them though the Andy co-produced "& Love For All", which like the Blur sessions sounds a lot like XTC, but in this case the XTC sound fits quite well since The Lilac Time have always been quite compatible with that sound. The output of their main songwriter Stephen Duffy feels like a more acoustic, folky, and low-key take on the Partridge/Moulding school of songwriting. Songs like "Towers Of London" "All Of A Sudden" and "Dying" could perhaps be a decent comparison.
