No service stars

The Him needed a new rear tyre, I have had an Avon Trail Rider tyre on the back for the last 10,000 miles, and it is still is not worn down to the TWIs.

If I wore it right down to them the profile would probably end up looking like an old Avon Speedmaster.

Anyway, ordered one (cheapest offer I could find) from a company called 123 Tyres - after nearly 5 weeks it arrived.

Check out their reviews - I wish I had.

Never going to use them again........

I often use Vintage tyres, a Company in Kent i think. Also, Watling tyres in Kent.
There are many large suppliers on ebay that deliver fast though.

Central Tyres in Birmingham delivered mine the next day.

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

Most of them seem to deliver in a day or two.

I have a guy just down the road who I normally get bike and tyres from, known him for years and does a good deal, would have used him but he could not get hold of the tyre I wanted.

No idea if they are, they are just extremely slow.

Think their warehouse may be in Germany or something which is why they are so slow.

What size did you get Andy ?

I have been using TyreTec Trading for the last couple of years (very keen pricing, fast delivery & website only shows in-stock tyres ) & contacted them in late May regarding the apparent non-availabilty of the Avon RoadRider 2 rear for my Classic 500. They are major Avon agents & had access to the Avon stock control system - seems the tyre I wanted had been out of stock for several months due to the closure of the UK Avon plant & relocation of production to France. Delivery of the tyre I needed was not due until after I returned from holiday & the TyreTec chap was not confident that delivery would be made when the system said it would based on recent past experience. I ended up getting the last Dunlop of similar style in the right size from M & P.

I have just checked the TyreTec site for the 120/90-17 Himalayan fitment AV54 TrailRider & they are showing that size as "discontinued".

So 123 Tyres may not be totally to blame here - Avon supply seems to be hit & miss now and it may be worthwhile looking for alternatives next time.

My Him (and Mrs B's Scram) came with Ceat tyres - apart from a distinct lack of grip on oily roundabouts (!) the Ceats seem to work OK - apart from the wear rate. I doubt my rear will see 3000 miles given the rate the tread is disappearing (and that at running-in throttle applications). Mrs B's Scram is the same. The Ceats are cheap (£60 for rear at M&P) but I am thinking along the lines of a pair of Continental Trail Attack 3s - don't envisage doing much beyond gravel tracks / forest tracks when it comes to off-roading.

I have been lucky with tyres by post but most often, i buy from Vintage tyres when they are at Shepton autojumble or Netley Marsh.
By the way you lot, Netley is on in 2 weeks. Be there or be round. (or square )

It's possibly down to availibility, and it was indeed a 120x90x17. Although when I ordered it, it was showing as a stock item.

The OE fitted rear Pirelli only lasted about 5000 miles, the Avon twice that hence wanted to fit another one.

Trail Attack 3 was one of the recommended alternatives, as were Continental Escapes, and Bridgtstone BT46.

Think they are all aimed at people that ride roads most of the time but who may venture off road from time to time.

I bet next time around, they will come quicker. In Exeter there is a company fitting Motorcycle tyres just ride in and they change it. Protyre but only use on the large tubeless tyres. I still use old fashioned tyre levers for the old bikes.

The Pirellis that RE originally fitted to the Hims seem to get good reviews - pity a change of policy by the Indian govenment (heavy taxes on imported components to stimulate local companies to make "World Class" products) made their use uneconomic. I found the Pirelli Phantom SportsComp OE tyres on my Interceptor good (despite the widespread unfounded Internet criticism of them) though the rears only did 4K - same as the ContiGo!s that I replaced them with and, strangely, the Avon Roadrider 2 rear on the Classic 500.

I have seem another tyre available in Him sizes that has piqued my interest - Turkish made Anlas Capra R steel belted radials. Only found good reviews so far, their UK agent is Cambrian Tyres & pricing is "competitive". Don't know if I am brave enough to give them a try, though. But just because they are not "mainstream" doesn't necesarily mean they are not competent. After all, who would have thought that the products of post-unification VEB Reifenwerk Heidenau would be quoted as a "go to" consideration for round the world type travellers (Heidenau K60 Scout) when their previous trade mark tyres - Pneumant - were pretty universally derided. Same for the Czech brand Barum - the motorcycle divison spun off as Mitas seems to be hald in reasonable regard now.

Out of interest, what is the manufacturing date on the Avon you have been supplied - shown as a 4 digit code (1st 2 digits week number + 2nd two digits year for date of manufacture) in an oval recess on the sidewall. Just wondered if it was recently made or if your supplier had had to hunt round for one that had been in stock for a while.

I used to complain if the Avons only lasted 25000 miles on the Ariel Red Hunter.

Many tourist attractions in Europe no longer take cash Leon. Naples castle and the Parthenon in Athens being just 2 examples. Both attractions required payment by I phone and they preferred you book on the phone so they can take the barcode on entry. Strange to me as i have no i phone so no entry to the castle and i bought tickets from another tourist for the Parthenon. He had printed 10 for bus customers who had not turned up for the journey.

It's all heading towards cashless and the expectation will be that everyone has smart phone.

I don't like it at all, but it's coming.

It's not working out that way here.

Because the banks are gradually upping their fees to businesses for cards or electronic transfers, more and more businesses are asking for cash, or giving a 4% "cash discount".

I use a card for fuel at the pumps so I don't have to get off the bike, and for on-line purchases and my electric bills, but 3/4 of my monthly check gets cashed and put in my pocket to buy groceries and anything else local.

When businesses AND the consumer both want to use cash, then that's the way it will happen....

What i find with the people having the idea we all have smart phones, i get links sent to my ancient mobile from the Dentist, Doctors and hospitals. None of which i can open.
For most shopping and bills, i use direct debits as my bank awards me a percentage of the charge back to me. On food shopping, if i use a card, i also get 1 percent back which is credited to my account each month. Cash is not to popular but if i want to donate to local charities shaking a can, i like cash for that.
Many charities now like to sell a lottery type ticket now and no cash tin. Of course, i do not do gambling so they get no money.
I am happy dropping cash into poppy, blind, Cystic fibrosis, Hospice and British Legion tins and a good way to donate is 10 percent of an ebay sale which i do and a few charities get some money each Month without me doing anything except selling my old bits.
Today at Tesco, withdrawing 100 pounds, it is paying out 50 pound notes which have to be checked by a supervisor in stores. Thats a bit crap.

If I withdraw, say, $2000 to put in my pocket for a months expenses, I'll get $1000 in $100 bills for the grocery store, garden center, and other big stores that will take them without hassle.

The rest I'll get in $20s which the little stores will take.

More and more people are doing that ....

An increasing number of places only take payment by iPhone for car parking and I don't have/want one. A right PITA.

Yes, those car parks, i have to drive on and find somewhere else. Hospitals use the phone and barrier system so i park up then go into the hospital and register the blue badge. That allows me to drive through.
In a kent hospital this year, i drove in and around and no spaces so tried to get out. Man on the speaker said i needed to pay. Very hard to explain to the non Englishman i had not parked and was just trapped in the car park. I park outside on double yellow lines after that using my 3 hour allowance

Dennis, i am having to burn all my banknotes to keep warm over Winter now they are taking my Winter fuel payment away. I note there is going to be a vote about that fuel payment soon. It was good while it lasted though.

At an MP's salary of £91,000 p.a. plus living and office expenses I doubt that it'll be a very difficult decision for many of them.
