Seeing the conditions were right for the west coast decided for a quick trip over to Ocean beach in Kawhia to wet a line. after a few baits being pulled off I decided for one last go and got the result I wanted a good tug on the line rod reset itself then anther good tug followed by slack line so it was time to take the rod out of the spike and take up some slack and wait for the next tug to give the rod tip a gentle lift everything went to plan and had a good solid hookup followed by a really good run taking almost 300 meters of .35 daimeter sufix Xl stron mono out with it. Not knowing what I had on the line I thought it was either one of four offenders a big snapper, kingfish, shark or a stingray. There was no bottom hugging going on like a stingray will typically do it was all long strong runs. 15 minutes later the fight was over and the offender was a short tailed stingray so the other half had to stop filming during the landing stage to go get my knife so I could cut the trace to release it as I just do not like killing stingrays due to them being such a graceful creature. So I thanked it for the challenge it gave me and sent it on its merry way watching until it disappeared out of sight to make sure it was not going to be stranded and be caused any undue suffering. Video clip of the fight is still uploading to you tube so stay tuned and I will post it as soon as it has completed the upload.
