Chris from the board and I headed to Opotiki and meet up with the rest of our club. Briefing was at 11am Opotiki headquarters with a beautiful day and a light NW breeze.

Great to catch up with some old faces up and meet up with more keen fishos.

Opotiki put on a top feed, scones with jam and cream, savories, sausage rolls you name it it was on the table. Great tucker to get you all charged up for long day & nights fishing... After the feed Betty told us the rules for the comp. At this stage no body was aware that Opotiki Club had held the cup 9 times to Gizzy 8... 11:30 it was a flying start...

Chris and I headed to Maraenui for the rising to high tide which has done me well in the past. We drove over the hill looking down over to the Motu and it looked awesome, getting down and onto the stones there were birds working a 200m off shore across a 1km stretch...

We drove drove down to our spot stook some time setting up our gear looking forward to getting our baits in to the water. We got our baits out when my rod over and started peeling line... taking my rod I, yep I was into something big and it it straight out into the bay at rate of knots with my drag at about 3-4 kg this was no snapper and while its great fun having your rod bent over and reel is peeling line, my penn 525 mag was down to less than half a spool of line in no time at all. I had put the brakes on there was no turning this fish, more brakes and hold on and the ping my line parted at the shock leader.

For a couple of hours we got smashed by sharks, chris pulled out the 50lb braid and landed a tope of 18kg. While I managed a pannie and a ky and I put back another small snap just under 30cm with chris bagging a nice trev to 1.9kg and a ky. We fished to 4.30pm and it was time to head to the sand and part 2 of our plan.
