There's also an old saying which I am sure you are aware of that still holds true today. "Fish your feet first" Honestly unless you are constantly fishing surf beaches like the ninety mile where long casts are required I think people get too wound up about distance casts. I wouldn't be too surprised if in fact you're sending your bait over the top of the fish... Speaking for myself, I have recently made the change from impact shields to imps and have found my distance already improved. But I fish deep shingle shelved beaches mainly where you don't need a long cast all the time and have caught alot of fish on a short - medium cast. Food for thought
