Any of you been out??

Just wondering how the fishing is going

If anyone fishing / ed Matata 10am-12pm (Snapper) or Mahanga 3-4:30pm (gurnard)Today Sunday I like to here how you went.

Just got back from a four hour session in Napier. There were some huge kahawai on the move, we landed several and they are in brilliant, fat condition. One very large red cod about 1.5kg, and a few spiny backs.

The local temperature is truly remarkable, 21 degrees yesterday and 19 degrees today. Who would want to put the gear away for winter when we are already enjoying spring-like temperatures? Very few people out surfcasting and I really can't understand why? Conditions were damn near perfect.

Good on you, Hangler ! not so hot weather wise over this side, can hear sea roaring from here (3 miles away) white bait are running big time, so maybe early spring ?

Funny you should mention whitebait, Te-hori. When I took my knife to the kahawai there were quite a few whitebait expressed in the stomach contents, this surprised me as I would have expected somewhat larger bait fish. However, it is obvious that by the kahawai's condition, what ever they were feeding on was packing on the weight.

I must also say I have landed three red cod this week. Whilst these fish may not be to everyone's liking as a sports fish, I have to say they were also in exceptional condition. When they took note of my filleting knife they produced beautiful, full, white fillets for the pan.

My son-in-law fished with me, and we have just had a very enjoyable barbecue dinner, complete with a bottle of sauvignon blanc. The fish of choice were spiny backs. I used the method of removing the fins and tail thin cutting the skin behind the head, and pealing away the skin as the southerners do with blue cod. The spiny catch was cleared in one dining session with the full appreciation of the diners.

My partner is Chinese and she has taught me so much about the true appreciation of fish and it's health benefits. I will be flying to Auckland on Friday and staying for ten days. I have a dozen kahawai heads, complete with wings to take with me in a chilly bag, it's great to see true appreciation for parts of the fish I would normally discard as less than useless.

Spiny backs skinned. Simple to do (with the aid of some pliers), now with the skinned trunk it is easy to remove the backbone if required, although that really isn't necessary.

These fish are easier to prepare this way than it is to deal with more common fish such as gurnard ie: no pin bones or rib bones.

I fished from 3pm to about 7ish yesterday and caught absolutely nothing. Didnt even see a crab.

You didn't see a crab, Rex, well at least you had one thing going for you.

When we left the beach the wind had risen and there was a small drop in temperature, there was also a hard current running toward the south. I am only guessing but perhaps that may have put them off the feed. My son-in-law and I fished the morning, we packed up at midday. Come to think of it the success I enjoyed on Tuesday was also during a morning session.

How's this for an obese red cod, I've just had it for my dinner. Floured, egg and Panko breadcrumbed, lovely white meat, absolutely delicious.

Trout fishing tonight Naki, 5.30 till 7pm no bites but I did catch one by the tail!

Hi naki, I have been having a lot of success using trevally. This was a very popular bait in the Hawke's Bay area thirty to forty years ago, late last year I thought I would give it another try and it worked.

Jeez those red cod are fat buggas Hangler. Anyway it was a bit unusual not see anything at an evenings fish over high tide. Still wasnt the first time and wont be the last I'm sure. Thats why they call it fishing and not catching.

Forget rugby James Westshore through to the beakons is looking very good this afternoon. Snapper caught at Te Awanga before the rain (15lb)on a rod from the beach.

Had a snoop myself yesterday Gary. Sea looked good, although it was low tide. Bit of weed at high tide mark but Ive seen worst. Not sure how Westshore looks after a Southerly blow though. Hehehehehe 1C low. The cod will love it
