Well I just played the "Joker" for next weekends points comp for Pania Surfcasting Club. I didnt fish this past weekend! That should do it. Double luck due on Saturday, I cant wait.The snapper don't know where the car park is! Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.
Lets all hope we get a slight increase in swell and a sea breeze, too damm flat at the mo. I dont say that often. Should be some good fish come ashore this 1
Up here the fishing has been not that great. Blacks has been dead, whakaki has been full of small kahawai and trevs, tahanui's been a dessert, not to flash at all.
Snapper rocks been the pick of the lot with some nice fish comming in. Lots of trevs with a few good ones in between. A few rats around at the moment too, havent seen anything big, just ones 4-8k max.
I took the boat out of blacks on Friday, 30 spineys, 1 red cod, I shit you not. I went out the bar in wairoa and headed down to waihua on Saturday, we caught 40 snapper in a couple of hours and were back by 9am. If waihua is clean boys, and you have a quad, I would highly recommend a tour.
From the second creak at wairoa heading towards waihua there is a huge set of rock just out of casting reach, Fishing from there back towards waihua would be the pick of the entire coast and your vehicles are very safe, in 3 years I have not heard of a car touched. If you go in from Waihua, head to the right, about half way back to mohaka you will see a big cut out in the cliffs, this is another outstanding spot which is holding............ And as a side note, consistently the biggest kahawai I have ever seen in the bay.
If you explore this area boys, you may just find a spot to remember, it doesn't get much pressure, holds plenty of fantastic reef structure and hold some incredible fishing.
As for Mahanga, I here there have been quite a few gurns comming in on the long lines and good sized snapper, but no suprizes that very few are caught on the rods. It has just come off a HUGE swell and with some onshore may produce.
Dinahs, as always at this time of the year, lots of sharks with a few smaller pannies in between.

Caught a Kahawai yesterday at Mohaka had 2 whole baby lemons the size of a blackmagic fillet knife , an eel and a jap longline hook which had been tied on a ledger rig inside its guts. Another had 4 6 inch whole baby kahawai in its guts. Some monster work ups along Waihua, and so much baitfish unreal. The snapper were almost non existent only caught a couple, but im sure there thick out a bit further. Looks like little swell, so it'll be testing during daylight hours thats for sure, light change evening is the time. Side note I HATE STINGRAYS!
Hell yeah, I trolled around off Waihua mucking around casting lures amongst work ups, there were work ups ever couple of hundred meters. Lots of fish rising too.
Snapper started off well, had a few good catches, now its dead, it does slow in december but usually the fishing is a bit better. The amount of spineys blew me away, me mate wore a spine through the forearm, horrible to watch, made me cringe.
The water is so clean up here, its just stunning. Right now shes glass, wish I had motivation, the hay fever this year is terrible. Know of 5 anglers that have fished whakaki and blacks over the past few days, not one snapper. Although they have been just fishing the car parks, best catches have just been kahawai, mullet and little trevs. Not even a gurnard.
Might have to stick a few livies out and throw some lures this weekend, try for a kingfish off the sands down at the bar. Wairoa Hawkesbay
Caught 5 @rsehole rays one 40kg flippd it over pulling hook out wave come around and keeper hook went right the way in and it took me 2secs to pull the thing right the way back out, bleed like crazy and got soaked supporting the weight of the ray attached to my trace attached to my finger. Cut the f##king trace next time. Ityl be a pleasant weekend anyways, tempting to go south and visit Ocean, would be very nice down there.
Fingers crossed for the weekend. It is shaping up like an ideal weekend for a trip south of the Cape. I fished between the weed clumps at Ocean Beach last field weekend and hit a couple of decent kahawi landing one. Theyll be there but will there be anything else? Stories from our southern boundry are tempting with gurnard over a kilo being caught on the rods at Herbertville in the last month. Porangahau hasnt been fished so who knows what may be there. A school visit from Taihape to PourerereBeach left the moki population in a daze after some serious skin diving in near shore holes. Might be worth a visit. Looking forward to just getting out for a fish this weekend myself! After 20 days straight of work, a beerzy a fishing rod and a camp fire never sounded better!!
