Hey mate. Just out of interest I had a look what's happening in Holland regarding bait used for Flounder and the like. The rig most anglers use is a sliding rig and they all use the long row of beads like you do (up to 12 !!). What I found interesting was that they never use a single bait. They make kind of cocktails with beach worms, squid and soft crab. No idea whether it works or not but you might want to have a try. Teach me how to upload a photo and I will. Very popular fish over there so they take it very serious by the sound of it.

When I lived in the UK (over 40 years ago) flounders were by far the most common catch for anglers, they were the surfcasters backbone.
I can recall a few years back reading an article on someone fly fishing for flounder, this was in New Zealand not overseas. From memory they used a nymph pattern, could be worth a Google.
My main problem at present, is knowing (or finding out) where and when to fish for the Flatties. More research is required.
Do they feed more at night? Do they prefer clean or off-colour water? Calm or choppy? What area within Napier's beaches would be best?
I am assuming, (and I could well be wrong), that they would prefer calm water, sandy or muddy bottom. I also assume they don't mind slightly dirty water as most of the UK videos I've watched feature muddy water.
Haha. Well... this guy who gave all the info on flounder fishing is of the opinion that you need a sandy seafloor and clear water. Because the Dutch waters can also be murky they sometimes need to go a little off shore to get to the clear water. If I find out some more I will let you know. I don't know anything mate. Just thought you would find the bait info interesting.
There have been accidental local catches of flounder and sole on all manner of baits over the years. Just last weekend one was caught during the Moki 1000 on a small piece of mussel.
I think all sorts of shellfish baits would be worth a try. The biggest issue with that, here in Napier, would be the crabs decimating your bait before any flounder came by. Just been talking to my very elderly Dad who used to fish for flatfish (Dab) off the seawall in UK - used a wire paternoster rig and pieces of ragworm - the rig was allowed to lie flat on the bottom - I remember seeing these rigs at the old house in Christchurch -they expanded when the lead pulled the end bit of wire down.
I read an article about 8 years ago on flounder fishing around Canterbury. The rig the guy used was like a miniature longline made up of 6kg mono with five small size 8 or 9 trout hooks. He had about a 2 oz sinker on the bottom end of his rig and at the top end a smaller sinker which made the rig and hooks lay flat on the floor.
Bait was live ghost shrimps collected from sandy beaches with a yabby pump. I haven't seen any in stores here, they're probably easy to make.
Fishing was done around dusk inside the estuary of the local river mouths in winter.
I've tried flounder fishing at Lake Ferry a couple of times without any luck but a friend caught one on a small piece of pipi. Rigs we used was a small running rig with a trout hook and used pipi, crab, corn and garden worms for bait. I'd love to find some ghost shrimps here, sounds like they're the go for bait.Fishing in windy Welly.
