The trade locally has lost a lot of very good techs for the reason of low pay, I`m afraid that by paying low wages they are sowing the seeds of their own demise, in my opinion if you don`t value your staff who are, after all "the company" as far as customers are concerned no matter whose name is over the door.
Most techs I meet realy do not seem to consider themselvs the real professionals we undoubtedly are, how many other trades have to be mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and computer engineers all in one? with the current level of technology constantly moving the goal posts.
A few years ago we had a careers adviser from the local school looking to place a lad for work experience, "he`s not very bright but he loves cars" was her description and that would appear to be the perception of mechanics, I spent some time advising her of the error of her ways and saying that we were looking for very bright people, but when they hear of the level of pay the bright ones go on to other things, says a lot about me I guess!!
Cheers, from a very soggy North Devon.
