Thanks for your detailed response. I have read all the posts and I am still trying to get to grips with it.
From what I understand, VW tweaked the software to meet with US regulations but was never checked by them. I would have thought there was nothing wrong with that as long as they were accurate and the emissions were good enough to pass their emission regulations on testing. If there was a problem with failing the tests...then fair enough. I am thinking of a car that can go faster than normal but is it called cheating because it has been re-mapped? Also, I used to create an airleak many years ago for a car to get through its test. Cheating? Yes. But it passed the current emission test so everyone was happy. Finally, do car manufacturers give unrealistic fuel consumption figures? Yes. But no big furore about cheating.
