VW Diesel Vehicles #

So someone has to ask the question

If VW in the USA only run the expected emissions under testing, but under normal driving condition emit up to 40 times the permitted amount, does this mean that here and the rest of Europe we are running the dirty version of the software because our diesel emission testing is not up to the job?

With all the diesel software tweaking and DPF removal going on, rather than banning diesels from our cities or charging drivers of diesels to enter, should our transport department not step up to the plate and make sure that ALL the diesels on our roads meet and stick to the manufacturers "CLEAN" emission claims

Or is it far easier to ban the vehicles or charge to enter towns and cities as this will generate "REVENUE" for the government rather than fix the problem

Yes, it probably does mean that.

Late model VWs also appear to circumvent our own fairly crude smoke test, because they won't rev above 2500 in neutral. Admittedly, on some vehicles, turning off the traction control allows them to rev higher.

Where any testing is done to a specific criteria, the VM's will adjust the mapping etc to meet that test criteria.

I suspect VW are just the first of several manufacturers to get caught.

Of course it's not just VW or diesel for that matter. Anyone remember the Vauxhall reflash "fix" that turned off the EGR?

So how easy was it for VW to fool the EPA in the USA and California Air Resources Board for so long

Well when you actually look at what is involved in their Diesel emission test

See if the MIL is on?
Visual inspection of emission components?
Visual smoke test?

So the whole test is down to a human just giving a visual inspection

Hence the initial test to let the vehicles being sold in the US is stringent (using dodgy software) after that they are home and dry

That is until some automotive nerd in a University decides to do a real world test with some proper emission equipment.......and blows a gaping hole in their own emission testing practices and VW

At least in the UK we do a test to check at least one of the harmful particulate components, but not the VERY harmful NOx

So in real terms I cannot see anything being done about affected vehicles in the UK

I service quite newish vehicles, even when the doors are all open and I have a newly serviced diesel ticking over it starts to make my eyes water and soreness in my throat.......can you image a street full of these ticking over in a busy London Street!!

Lets face it, Diesel is not a clean fuel no matter how much software you throw at it or bolt on emission devices

I don't believe VW will be able to fix the problem with updated software, just have to put up with the pollution till the end of their life......reducing the NOx emissions to such a low level is just going to strangle performance

Maybe I am a bit dense, but I am finding this hard to understand. Peter Warman has outlined the limited criteria to pass the US emission test. So...what has changed out there? Presumably they passed the test before. These vehicles pass our more rigorous test without problem.

I shall mull it over with another beer on the balcony out here in the Philippines.... :-)

Hi Peter

Nothing has changed, its just taken 9 years for the USA to realise they have been duped due to their own inefficiency, I expect that fact is hurting them just as much as VW are hurting

Back in 2008/2009 California lowered their Diesel emissions to help combat pollution much the same way we introduced Euro 5 and now Euro 6

The problem being that the TDi engine has been around for a long time, emissions have got tighter so how do you comply with lower emission output without re-inventing the diesel engine?

In the laboratory at VW I expect they use far more sophisticated test equipment than your regular testing station. They can have an engineer tweak the MAP until the emission come into the required limit. They can then write this into the ECU software or add a little black box that kicks in when a static test is done

VW can then submit these figures to the USA and they are then allowed to export their vehicles. The problem being did the USA carry out the same testing before they are allowed in?.......possibly but they would have got the same result

Problem arises when these cars are out in the real world with 20K / 80k miles on the clock, they revert back to the dirty diesels they really are. Their annual or bi annual smog test is only visual so was never going to trip them up (this was proven a while back by a University in a real word test)

Our own diesel emission test is only slightly better in the fact the we check for particulate output, but is a million miles away from verifying the manufacturers claims........our emission test cannot even detect a missing DPF

I think it proves that this is a global issue in the fact that when the diesels are out of the lab and in the real world the emissions are far in excess of the manufacturers static test claims

The other problem of course is the fact we are now adding Bio to the Diesel which is just exasperating the problem for manufactures. I do not believe you can burn diesel fuel and expect clean emissions no matter how many devices you bolt on or tweak software

More manufacturers will need to come clean about their emission figures, not to say they have been cheating, but that there is a vast difference between lab conditions and real world conditions

There is not going to be cheap fix for VW, software tweak is not going to work on its own......fit more anti pollution bits? The fix may cost more than the value of some older vehicles. VW will end up buying them all back

Where do you get your info from regarding "Smog Test Procedures"?

As far as I am aware, A smog test is carried out on a rolling road and NOX is measured.

If what you say is correct, Why would VAG need to even tweek the software to alter mapping under test conditions?

I wonder how the emissions change after a car has it's complementary "re-flash" for drive-ability problems etc. EGR valves where regularly "mapped out" on some petrol GM/Vauxhall cars a while ago.

The NOX test you refer to is for Petrol vehicles

VAG need to tweak the software to get the emissions down to a level that is acceptable so that they can be sold in the USA. The cheat software is installed just in case a random (or roadside) static test is carried out. But on the open road all bets are off, reverts back to much higher emissions (as the university technician uncovered)

This is why it was undetected for so long in the USA, the state that has the highest emission standards in the world only has a visual test for diesels, no particulate tailpipe testing, no Dyno, no NOx test, Is the MIL on or off (pretty scientific)

You are correct in all you say.
The Californian smog test worked on the assumption that if the mil light was off then all was good with the fitted emission devices as tested BEFORE those vehicles could be sold in the US, The cheat software was used during initial testing.
The level of fines being levied and vehicles recalled reflects the fact that VW deliberately conned us all.
Our test is no better, as you say, it cannot even detect an illegal DPF delete.
High outputs of Nox are not just confined to diesel engines, despite the presence of Nox cats and sensors, modern GDI engines are also producing (and not dealing with),high levels of Nox.
When we test for this gas correctly and stop cars from running with excessive levels then we will have a world full of parked up cars.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your detailed response. I have read all the posts and I am still trying to get to grips with it.

From what I understand, VW tweaked the software to meet with US regulations but was never checked by them. I would have thought there was nothing wrong with that as long as they were accurate and the emissions were good enough to pass their emission regulations on testing. If there was a problem with failing the tests...then fair enough. I am thinking of a car that can go faster than normal but is it called cheating because it has been re-mapped? Also, I used to create an airleak many years ago for a car to get through its test. Cheating? Yes. But it passed the current emission test so everyone was happy. Finally, do car manufacturers give unrealistic fuel consumption figures? Yes. But no big furore about cheating.

The vehicle were inspected by the US but due to the "cheat" it passed their regulations. However, as soon as the vehicles are driven in real world conditions, they no longer meet the emission regulations, and as such are not suitable for use on US roads.

The vehicle you cheated on the emission test many years ago, is a case in point. The vehicle only passed the emission test because you modified it. As soon as the vehicle was back on the road, it was breaking emission regulations again. That may have pleased the vehicle owner by saving him money, but could have cost him more had he been stopped by the "local council" with their mobile emission vans (which never materialized).

Currently, the VW owners in the UK pay less roadtax based on their emission output. If the figures are incorrect in real world driving, then they are cheating the government out of thousands of pounds of revenue, and governments definitely don't like that!

It therefore begs the question..... how many cars pass the emission tests as it stands but in real world conditions would fail? Similar to the fuel economy figures as given out by the manufacturer.

Also, since VAG have the Audi etc, and many with the same engines and mapping, I wonder if they will be affected also.

As has been mentioned burning diesel in any way is a dirty operation the best we can hope for is containment,but remains the dilemma of disposal of said remains. Can`t see a real answer my self ,time to stick head back in the sand......Paul

I have heard that they (V.A.G) are to put new injectors and software in the 1.6 tdi's and only software in the 2.0 tdi's, anyone heard anything else as i keep being asked by some customers? cheers steve

Just a thought. In the cut throat, back stabbing motor industry we have, If any motor manufacturer was certain their product was running totally clean, would they not have bought out advertising proclaiming their honest product?
So are the other manufacturers not sure what their engines and software are doing, or are they well aware and are just hoping they dont get looked at?

Quite simply politics & bankers have f*c!ed it.
We all have a major can of worms that cannot be rectified.
Think about it this way.....
There has to be a complete change of wash from the top down. But that never happens due to corrupt backscratching.

The whole system has undermined the MOT emissions test.

If we could have a true free market it would develop clean engines through freewill not by fudging latest tailpipe standards with Pig Piss.

The way diesel engines are setup now gives a short term tailpipe roses & petals but EGR cycles & regen counts per trip are hammering the engine oil & clogging intake systems.

Have Had diesel vehicles pass the MOT emissions but then a day or two after had running issues & faults after the MOT due to the rev cycle for the gas analyser causing different pressures in the engine due to partcially blocked DPF

If you seal a turd in a balloon you can't smell it but when the balloon bursts you have BIG JOB on your hands.

Manufactures software now monitors EGR & DPF flow through air mass readings. Citroen to name a few do this now. This is how they detect EGR valve failure & DPF backpressure dropoff.
So EGR / DPF deletes will not work on this setup & this setup is getting more common.

So moral of the story is DON'T DELETE YOUR PUSSY.

Most if not all Manufactures have been monitoring EGR via MAF or MAP for I guess around 10 years, surly that is the reason you need a software delete rather than just a blanking plate ?

Manufacturers are getting more creative with the software to prevent EGR DPF deletes.

Why you would want to remove these out of the loop is beyond me!

Currently struggling with emissions on a landrover defender with EGR DPF delete.

Why don't people just keep it serviced with the money they would waste on lengthy & costly EGR DPF removal

Its simple in my mind, COST, £300-£400 for an egr/dpf delete compared to £1800 for a dpf/CAT for a 2.5 year old Corsa where dealership refused to replace it for the 2nd time under warranty laying blame on customers driving cycles.

Not an excuse in my opinion as the car obviously wasn't fit for purpose.

If aftermarket dpf's fail to work (which from what you read is common) then either a cleaning route is taken which again isn't a guarantee then what other choices or options other than genune DPF which can often write a car off.

Have you read the release today of the europe fix for these vehicles? Do we really believe that will have any bearing on the system? a 50p bit of wire gauze placed before the MAF, and a tweek to the software. The 2.0 doesnt even get the bit of gauze . And they say it will have no detrimental performance effect on power or mpg !!!!

German auto supplier Robert Bosch GmbH has been accused of conspiring with Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE) to evade diesel emissions standards in at least 11 million vehicles worldwide in a class action lawsuit filed late on Monday.

The lawsuit filed by a New York diesel owner in U.S. District Court in Detroit names Bosch - the world's largest auto supplier - along with VW, former VW CEO Martin Winterkorn and VW U.S. chief Michael Horn.

"Volkswagen's fraudulent scheme was facilitated and aided and abetted by defendant Bosch, which created the software used in Volkswagen's defeat device," said the 56-page lawsuit, which accuses the parties of violating civil racketeering laws and consumer fraud.

"Bosch's Hear no evil, See no evil' rationale for knowingly profiting from Volkswagen's crimes does not enable Bosch to escape civil liability under American law."

Reuters reported last month that federal prosecutors with the U.S. Justice Department are examining whether Bosch knew or participated in Volkswagen's years-long efforts to circumvent U.S. diesel emissions tests, citing people familiar with the matter.

Bosch built key components in the diesel engine used in six Volkswagen models and one Audi model that the automaker has admitted to rigging to defeat emissions tests.

The probe of Bosch is at an early stage and there is no indication that U.S. prosecutors have found evidence of wrongdoing at Bosch, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

A U.S. Bosch spokeswoman declined to offer an immediate comment on the lawsuit. Bosch previously declined to comment on the investigation.

Bosch also faces similar class-action lawsuits in Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati, Alabama and Alexandria, Virginia.

The latest lawsuit says "as early as 2007, Bosch warned Volkswagen that using its software in vehicles that were driven on the road would constitute a criminal offence. Nevertheless, Bosch proceeded to sell or license 11 million of the component devices to Volkswagen over the next seven years."

The lawsuit cited a report from Germany's Bild am Sonntag newspaper in September that said VW's internal probe had turned up a 2007 letter from Bosch that also warned against the possible illegal use of Bosch-supplied software technology.

Under U.S. law, that would make Bosch a co-conspirator under anti-racketeering laws, making the company liable for triple damages for the fraud caused to U.S. consumers, the lawsuit says.

A U.S. judicial panel will meet in New Orleans Thursday to consider consolidating more than 350 lawsuits filed against VW in connection with the emissions scandal. VW and the Justice Department want the lawsuits centralized in Detroit.
