I want to be able to tell the customer what is wrong with his vehicle, not the other way around, then expect it fixed for nowt Peter

Posted by Dave Hill on August 7, 2007, 6:48 am, in reply to "Re: Wikipedia style Repair Listings" I hate it when my wife visits the doctor & tells him that she has been looking on the Internet & thinks she has found out what's up with her. I can see his face change as he thinks "here we f***** go" I agree that there are many occasions were DIY'ers get it totally wrong & end up paying more for the job, but the reality is that there are too many answers to to car related problems, that have been figured out the hard way by guys at the sharp end. Its not like we earn a fortune in the first instance, as most guys don't charge for every hour they put in on a tricky job (I think anyway) Its hard to justify charging three hours to find a fuel pressure related problem on a Rover 75 when the customer comes to collect it & tells you he has read all about the fault on the net. Keep it in the trade, I think! Cheers now Dave (Hill)

Re: Wikipedia style Repair Listings
Posted by Graham Bullock on August 7, 2007, 11:42 pm, in reply to "Re: Wikipedia style Repair Listings" I also think there is enough open forums without this adding to them but I wish good data was available for us. As an example, my mate has a KTM enduro motorbike, he has a full workshop manual and spares catalog supplied with it and all data/info needed is available. All parts are readily available at a reasonable cost and are usually correct because of the parts catalog. It is actually quite a pleasure to work on something you have never touched before but are not afraid to get involved in. This at first thoughts may sound like a worry for the dealers because they might not get the repair work, but KTM appear to be selling thousands more bikes than the competition due to their ethics. Car manufactures seem to be able to hold us to ransom for some reason, which I can only think of one main difference between cars and bikes which may effect this - Bikers talk to each other and usually buy from recommendations whereas car drivers just go out and buy what ever.
