Sorry i took so long to post the fix but i wanted to be sure the car was ok first.
The guys at VRS in coventry plugged vag com in and came to the same conclusion as me (ECU) so i got a used one and had it programmed to suit and hey presto car fixed. Thanks to all of you for your input and suggestions
