I know it's a long shot but worth mentioning maybe. I had a fault many years ago with a 318i 4 cylinder with starting and poor running which turned out to be a faulty crankshaft pulley but it was easily seen when you grabbed the outside of the pulley and you could turn it while crank stayed put, Jim.
