Hi pete,I don,t think you are crazy or confused at all!!I have seen a similar fault on a punto where the dash functions disappear and the pas stops working.However engine did not cut out.I am sure it was an ignition switch fault as it is a multi contact unit that can lose part of its function.Drop down the column cowl and the circuits to the switch can be disconnected independently.(if you see what I mean).Switch is part of top column mount About £100 from memory.So thats about half the value of the car,with fitting.
