Fiat Punto 1.2 2004 - Cutting out - Fixed #

( Optional ) Scanner Used: ACR4 G2
( Optional) Fault Codes: Nil Shown

Evening All,

I would appreciate some guidance on this. This vehicle can cut out on irregular occaisons whether idling or on the road. The strange thing about it which I have not seen before and maybe a big clue is that all the dashboard warning lights will go out when the vehicle decides to stop. Also the vehicle will restart straight away on the key or if driving by depressing the clutch in gear.

No fault codes were stored although I am told there were a multitude of them before I pitched up which were cleared down. The garage did not make a note of them and assumed they were logged because they were raving the vehicle apart trying to get to the bottom of the problem. Vehicle did not play up when I was there and everything including the emissions were good.

I have suggested to the garage that all earthing points are checked carefully and the after-market radio be disconnected as I believe these can cause weird and wonderful problems.

This has been done but the problem has re-appeared. I am off the road at the moment and in the interim would appreciate any thoughts before re-visiting the vehicle. They cannot code read the vehicle for me because their scanner (whatever it was) has "gone down".

You have confused me Pete,does not take much though

This seems to assume you have warning lights illuminated on the dash prior to the thing cutting out? or have I mis read?

Regarding their scanner failure, any generic eobd scanner ought to be able to link with this as petrol 2001 on, I now carry a C-reader 5 in my pocket at all times from Launch,great little reader,very fast and updateable.

Hi Tony,

Sorry to have mis-lead you. Normally on a vehicle that decides to cut out whatever the reason, the dash-board warning lights come on. On this vehicle they don't which leads me to think that the cutting out is not due to the normal reasons such as crank sensor, relays etc. So this in a way discounts the normal reasons for the vehicle to break down but at the moment I cannot think of any logical reason why the dashboard warning lights do not illuminate.

I agree with you about the C-Reader 5. I use it as a first look tool and find the instant graphing of various components saves me digging out and setting up Pico. However, when I mentioned this in one of my posts last year, it brought a lot of amusement and merriment from readers who decried this handy little tool.

Hi pete,I don,t think you are crazy or confused at all!!I have seen a similar fault on a punto where the dash functions disappear and the pas stops working.However engine did not cut out.I am sure it was an ignition switch fault as it is a multi contact unit that can lose part of its function.Drop down the column cowl and the circuits to the switch can be disconnected independently.(if you see what I mean).Switch is part of top column mount About £100 from memory.So thats about half the value of the car,with fitting.

Hi Pete
Seen a few fiats now with this type of error and have changed a few ignition switches try putting the ignition on and wobbling the key to see if ignition lights go out as this happend on the last one I did

Evening Mark,

I have no idea at the moment and nor does the Doc. Wake up in the morning with a twinge which gradually gets worse and then ends in swelling and acute pain resulting in sleepless nights, ice-packs, days off the road and serious sense of humour failure. If I do drive, I use 1st, 3rd and 5th gears only (left knee) and use my right hand to lift leg up to place on and off clutch pedal. Depressing clutch is no problem. Lasts about 3 weeks. Now 90% better with steroids but whether this is coincidence we shall see.

Garage is obtaining ignition switch and reporting back...

Would be interested in your thoughts about both subjects.

PS.. trying to get your lower garments on with a straight leg is a time consuming and a very fine art!

Evening All,

This appears to be a fix. New ignition switch fitted and given back to the customer to try. Had it for a few days and so far so good. The garage waggled the old switch as previously suggested and created a few problems with the PAS and instrument panel although it did not cut out.

Many thanks for those who took an interest. It is also nice to "fix" a car from this end of the phone when incompacitated. Garage is impressed.

NB. Knee is now fixed. Can now do knee jerk reactions, knee tremblers and can get my leg over (van foot pedals)

Hi Pete,glad you seem to have both problems sorted.I would be interested to know what diagnostic eguipt the doc used on your leg . I think I might have a go at fixing people as I don't seem to be having much luck at fixing cars at the moment!!

Just guesswork I think! No pico-scope, amps clamps, or even scanners...tried all sorts of medications. Maybe our profession is more complicated than that of a GP!

Whilst wearing my other hat, I recently assisted a paramedic to give CPR. It was rather ironic watching the scope go up and down with every chest compression and then flat line whilst air was given. Perhaps the equipment we now require is getting much nearer to the medical profession than we realise.
